Background

The Department was emerged out in 2001 with the onset of this University from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The Department is entrusted to cater research, extension and allied activities other than the teaching by the well-known faculties and staffs.

Functions 

•  To impart teaching in Soil Science and Ag. Chemistry for BSc, MSc and Ph.D degree

•  To set programmes for validation of the research output into the field.

•  To undertake multi dimensional and multi Institutional projects

• To impart trainings on soil test based fertilizer recommendations

 Teaching:

The faculty members of the Department are engaged in teaching for undergraduate and post graduate students under the semester system. The quality of good teaching for the students to equip themselves with the sound knowledge of the subject and applying it into the practical arena in the direction of understanding the dynamics of soil-water-plant systems, has got the prime importance.

Research:

 The research programme are undertaken at the PG level in different aspects -

1.  Fertility trials in soil under different locations.

2. Understanding the different physical properties of soils.

3. Heavy metal pollutions and its mitigation options.

4. Site specific nutrient management.

5. Isolation and screening of soil- born microbes.

Extension: 

           Department is involved to disseminate the outcome of the research work into the farmers’ fields for validation of the results.

Infrastructural Facilities: 

1.  Environmental Science laboratory – Renders the activities related to environmental pollution.

2.  GIS-Remote sensing laboratory – Imparts knowledge on GIS and Remote sensing approaches in agriculture and allied fields.

3.  Soil-Chemistry / Fertility laboratory – Provides analytical facilities for soil-plant samples

4.  Soil Physics/Pedology laboratory – Designed for analysis of soil physical properties

5. Soil Microbiology laboratory – Renders activities on microbial aspects on soil
